Gifts from Retirement Accounts

Making gifts to Fostering Hope from your traditional retirement accounts allows you to:

  • Avoid paying income tax on distributions
  • Preserve your account's value

There are several advantageous ways to give from retirement accounts:

Required Minimum Distributions (RMD): If you are over age 72 and are required to distribute funds from your retirement plan, you can satisfy your annual RMD and avoid paying income tax on the distribution by giving directly to SVdP USA.

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): If you are over age 70 1/2, you can distribute up to $111,000 per year from your IRA directly to Fostering Hope without paying income tax. This counts toward your RMD.

Legacy IRA Transfer: Thanks to the SECURE 2.0 Act, if you are over age 70 1/2, you can make a one-time tax-free donation of up to $55,000 from an IRA directly to a charitable gift annuity or remainder trust that benefits SVdP USA.

Beneficiary Designation: At any age, you can designate Fostering Hope as a beneficiary of your retirement accounts. Traditional retirement accounts make great assets to transfer to tax-exempt charities because heirs are required to pay income taxes on their distributions.

Frequently asked questions

Your gift will increase the number of foster families supported nationwide who receive the life-changing, family-like volunteer support from Fostering Hope. By helping us build the national capacity needed to bring Fostering Hope to new communities, you are contributing to system-level impact with support for program development, training, affiliate support, evaluation, technology, and national leadership. Your investment helps us grow while protecting the quality and relationships that make the model effective.

This was the same question Fostering Hope faced 20 years ago in Colorado Springs when this model was just an idea tested in a pilot program serving just two foster families. At that time, we believed that a commitment to good stewardship, thoughtful strategic planning, humility, and a culture rooted in learning and focused on impact would bring the support we needed. Our hope Today, we hold that same belief and have set the same standards. This effort is the result of two years of planning, rigorous research, and generous startup investments.

We measure more than families served, volunteer hours, or meals delivered. We track whether foster parents continue fostering, whether children remain stable in their placements, and whether young people achieve long-term outcomes in education, employment, and housing. Our work has also been independently evaluated, including an analysis of its economic impact. The results have been promising. In Colorado Springs, every $1 invested has created nearly $3 in impact. We expect this to grow even higher as we bring this to other communities.

Many excellent organizations provide essential services directly to children or help mobilize practical support for foster families. Fostering Hope fills a different gap. We strengthen foster families—particularly those caring for children with significant needs—through long-term volunteer teams that are professionally facilitated by trained Coordinators. That combination of community, professional facilitation, staying power, and measurable outcomes defines our approach.

Colorado Springs remains the proving ground for the Fostering Hope model and continues serving families through our original affiliate. Fostering Hope USA was created for a different purpose: to take what has been learned over 20 years and equip other communities to implement it. National investment allows one proven local model to create impact far beyond the community where it began.

We are intentionally choosing depth before speed. New affiliates won’t simply receive a toolkit and be left to implement it. Fostering Hope USA will provide training, data systems, ongoing coaching, and support for the professional Coordinators who facilitate each team. We will measure results as we grow and use what we learn to continually strengthen the model.
